Ph.D. Research
My Master's degree was grounded in critical pedagogy as framed by Paulo Freire, and his philosophy (and that of those who have continued his work such as Grace Lee Boggs and Jeff Duncan-Andrade) that education is an act of liberation and empowerment still shapes my own philosophy of education and my pedagogical practice.
As I continue my work and research, and prepare for a Ph.D. program, I am focusing on designing multilingual education at the secondary levels. I want to investigate the proposition that secondary students can study multiple languages simultaneously and achieve far more than America's public education currently demands of them. I believe that students' linguistic abilities across multiple languages will amplify not only their individual voices, but also the voices of their communities and the nation, while facilitating a more profound understanding of other peoples and cultures in the world.
